7 Things to Give Up to Become Your Best You

Reaching higher levels of performance and success, and growing into the person we are meant to be, isn’t always about adding more things — often, it’s about giving up a few of them.

Here are a few places to start.

#1 Worrying about what other people think of you

You know the old adage: “What others think of you is none of your business.” Well, ain’t that the truth. Not only is it none of our business, we are foolish if we put any stock whatsoever into what others think of us. Letting others opinions of what we say or do (unless they’re good ones!) dictate our mood, or occupy any of our thoughts is pointless.

Take it form Dr. Seuss, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

#2 Obsessing over the past

You can’t be successful in this (or any future) season of your life if you keep living in the past. The boss who passed you over for a promotion, the ex who cheated, the best friend who  betrayed you, and that one time (at band camp) you did the unthinkable – they are all in the past. You can’t change them. All any of us can do is pick ourselves off, dust ourselves off, and dive head first into the now.

#3 Surrounding yourself with toxic people

Some people are quite simply, bad for us — whether intentional or not. It is our job is to protect both our time and our energy by disallowing toxic people to occupy space in our world.

Get them out of your head, out of your bed, and no where near your business. Then….watch as all of the good things start to come your way.

#4 Pushing for someone else’s goals, instead of your own

The key word in the phrase “Living your best life” is YOUR. It’s not about anyone else’s goals. Or anyone else’s idea of what success does or should look like for you. You and you alone get to decide what matters and who matters….what is worth pursuing and what isn’t.

As Steve Jobs so wisely said, “Your time is limited. Don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

#5 Throwing out excuses

The bravest, and often toughest, thing we can do is to be honest with ourselves. Yet, in order to be the best us we can be, we must do exactly that. Quit with the excuses when a deadline is missed or you come up short for a goal.

Living our best life involves having the courage to own up to your mistakes and your shortcomings, and to get real with those around you.

#6 Waiting for some “magic bullet”

I’ll let you in on a little secret in terms of this whole “magic bullet” theory. There isn’t one! No profession, no industry, no sport, no diet, no endeavor with pursuing has a magic bullet. So if you’re try to shortcut the road to success, save some time and stop now. The only thing that works is work.

#7 Overthinking

Most of the things we choose to obsess over or worry about are nothing short of made up BS, that when it comes right down to it, will likely never happen. Quit obsessing, quit overthinking, and TAKE ACTION! (Enough said on that one, don’t ya think!).
