14 May 5 things I learned from being a mom
On any given day, I am pretty confident in the fact my kids have taught me more than I ever learned in all my years of school. Perhaps even more than I learn from running my company or working with clients.
In honor of Mother’s Day, here are the Top 5 Things I have learned from being a mother:
Control your Expectations
We can’t all be perfect — in fact, none of us can. “Expectation vs. reality” is a very real thing, and the sooner we can learn to master our expectations, the happier and more fulfilled we will be – in business and in life. Every mom on the planet has had her very own “Pinterest fail” moment — where, much to her dismay, the vision she had for a project looks nothing like the finished version. When it comes to “mom” projects, this altered reality can actually provide quite the comic relief! Not so much when it comes to business.
Learning to manage our expectations and not put too much emphasis on when things go a bit off kilter goes a long way in helping us create a much more fulfilled “reality.”
Preparation is key
As any mom can attest……you’ve got to prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. Then you’ve got to prepare for what could go wrong. Take time each evening to outline the tasks and to dos you have on your plate the next day (personal and professional). Next, assess the “white space” in your calendar for that following day and slot your tasks in there. The goal is to know ahead of time what you will tackle during your free minutes. Sure, the unexpected will still throw a wrench in your day from time to time, and you’ll have to course correct. Yet, on most days, knowing ahead of time what tasks you will complete and what items you will check off your list will save you from staring at the computer (or at your to do list) wondering “What should I tackle first?”
Parenting (like business) is a team sport
There’s not one single one of us who can do life alone….there is simply to much to do & to experience. One of the coolest thing about parenting is that we have a built in team (altho – most of my mom friends have thought about trading a player or two from time to time!).
A great team makes the wins sweeter and the losses more bearable. While we can’t choose our family (I’d choose mine again any day!), we can choose our friends and the people we surround ourselves with professionally. Bottom line….choose the right team!
Done is better than perfect
Meeting deadlines, completing projects and honoring our commitments are critical to lead fulfilled, abundant lives. Yet, sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect, we don’t do all the things we are capable of.
Like we discussed above in terms of controlling our expectation, quit striving for perfection…just DO!
People follow what you DO more than what you SAY
One of the most profound lessons I have learned as a parent is that while what we tell our children matters….it is what we do that has the greatest impact. Children are always watching (seriously….AL-WAYS watching!). What they see us do matters. The lives we led, the examples we set, and the choices we make shape them and their behavior far more than any lecture we may ever give.
While we spend our lives teaching our children, it really is amazing to sit back and think how much they teach US….if we let them!
